The passing of Olivia Newton-John captivated the attention of the digital public, with the late actor’s Wikipedia entry being read more than five million times in the four days following her death. Google searches for the Grease star skyrocketed, vastly eclipsing searches for information on either Joe Biden or Donald Trump, who are typically among the most frequently searched people (see chart). On YouTube, an already popular video of “You’re the One That I Want” saw a massive increase in views.
Meanwhile, the CDC’s August 11 decision to relax COVID-19 guidance sparked a flurry of discussion among American Twitter users, primarily in the form of recrimination, which came from all sides Those who felt guidance should not be modified denounced the CDC as being controlled by business interests, while those who felt it should be modified criticized the CDC for not doing so sooner. The most shared posts on the topic included those from @NBSaphierMD, @CaseyMalone, @jackmirkinson, and @thebradfordfile. Sentiment toward the CDC was, overall, strongly negative.
